The Tale of Genji was the first novel to be published in Japan. Having made its debut during the flourishing Heian period–the equivalent of the Renaissance era in Western art–Genji Monogatari is an extensive work of courtly intrigue and romantic adventure.
While many renditions of this classic have been rendered through the ages, Masao Ebina’s modern print imbues a bright, lively color to its modern forms. Funky yet subdued, kimono patterns are eye-catching for their sharp minimalism. Classic gradient techniques for shading have been incorporated in Ebina’s print, albeit in lighter, modern hues. The lushness of the garden enhances the uplifting green of the bamboo, evoking an air of calm relaxation. A moment of furyu –or quiet refinement– for the viewer as for the main character of the scene.
